The #MiCA transitional period has come to an end. A new regulatory era for crypto-assets in the European Union has officially begun.
As of 1 July 2026, the transitional period under the Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (#MiCA) has expired. Subject to the transitional arrangements applicable in each Member State, firms providing regulated crypto-asset services in the European Union are now expected to operate within the MiCA framework or another lawful transitional regime where available.
The new framework introduces a harmonised regulatory regime for crypto-asset service providers (#CASPs), token issuers and other market participants, with the objective of enhancing market integrity, consumer protection and legal certainty across the EU.
MiCA is particularly relevant for:
• Crypto-Asset Service Providers (CASPs)
• Centralised and decentralised crypto businesses
• Crypto exchanges and OTC trading desks
• Brokers and custodians
• Issuers of asset-referenced tokens and e-money tokens
• Stablecoin issuers
• Web3 companies, blockchain projects and fintech businesses seeking to operate within the European market
Failure to comply with the applicable regulatory requirements may expose businesses to supervisory measures, administrative sanctions and, depending on the national implementation of the regulatory framework, additional legal consequences.
